The question I have for this weeks newsletter is- Why are we not feeling the terror of global warming? Science Educator David Suzuki was asked last Friday night whether he feels hope? He answered that he and is wife go to bed every night in tears over their fear for the future and their belief that they are not doing enough. In the morning they see their grandchildren and again feel hope.
Joanna Macy teaches that we will not do anything about climate change until we allow ourselves to feel the terror and friend Larry Hobbs says it this way to a men's groups that we participate in i was thinking more clearly later in the morning about your fine question about what to do with the terror about the fate of our world, i remembered Kubla-Ross's steps around death. i think that it is not good for us to sit forever with the terror but to sit with it long enough to go through the steps (perhaps hours or perhaps years) of death and loss of our vision of this world for us and our children and then the 'right' action will automatically emerge from deep within us. This action will always be 'right' in my opinion and experience. if we act before deeply wrestling with the demons of loss, we tend to act in a way to conserve our narrow view of what is right for us and it usually gets us into another mess or heightens the mess we are already in.
Kubla-Ross's and Joanna Macy's teachings are both part of the curriculum for the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium. ForTheGrandChildren will be sponsoring several upcoming symposiums that you can find our about and register for on our website at www.forthegrandchildren.org. ASKING THE CROWD FOR HELP We love the name ForTheGrandChildren but we may need to find a new name because of a conflict with another organization. We have been thinking of new possible names but have not settled on anything yet. Some of the suggestions include Being Present For The Future of Our Grand Children and Grandparenting the Future. We would love some creative suggestions for a new name. We would be very grateful.
